Today's Scripture readings are really agreed on the 'theme' of thunder, lightning, snow, a storm, north winds, hail and clouds ( Book of Job ). The Lord speaks to Job "out of the storm" and reminds him of God's control of the sea by establishing boundaries beyond which the water cannot come. The symbolism of the miracle of Jesus calming a storm on the Sea of Galilee is evident: The boat carrying his disciples represents the church. And the church will always be exposed to the winds of change and the storms of history, and the never-ending fears and predictions that the boat is sinking, "Lord, please, save us, or we perish!" And, again, history has proved that the Lord is ever near - even if He appears to be asleep!
